He also struck out five and walked none but didn’t receive much help from the Twins’ offense in a loss. These last two starts since returning from the disabled list have to remind Fister of his Mariners days, with great pitching nullified by low run support. His six innings of one-run ball last Saturday at Oakland weren’t enough to earn him a victory.

Oakland at Texas – A’s RHP Brandon McCarthy (3-3, 2.56) vs. Rangers LHP Matt Harrison (4-3, 5.23): McCarthy, who compiled 10 strikeouts against the Tigers in Saturday’s win, showed no signs of shoulder issues after having his start pushed back as a precaution earlier in the week. He has given up two earned runs or fewer in seven of eight starts. … Harrison, after losing to the Angels on Saturday, is 1-3 with an 8.86 ERA in his last four starts. He is 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA in two starts at home. He has made six starts and three relief appearances against Oakland and is 4-1 with a 4.10 ERA.

Baltimore at Kansas City – Orioles LHP Brian Matusz (2-4, 5.50) vs. Royals RHP Luke Hochevar (3-3, 7.20): Matusz continues to struggle with consistency, but his most recent outing was one of his best, as he allowed only two earned runs to beat the Rays. Now he must focus on getting deeper into games — he pitched just 5 2/3 innings in his last start. … The right-hander turned in his best outing of the season Saturday against the White Sox, allowing only three hits in seven shutout innings while striking out five. Hochevar is just 1-4 with a 6.63 ERA in six career starts against the O’s.

Chicago White Sox at LA Angels – White Sox LHP Chris Sale (3-2, 3.08) vs. Angels LHP C.J. Wilson (4-3, 3.42): It was a rough return to the rotation for Sale, who gave up three runs in the first inning and threw nine of his first 11 pitches for balls. But he settled down to throw five solid innings in his first start since May 1. … Wilson’s Friday start was halted after five batters due to a near-two-hour rain delay at Rangers Ballpark. So he came back Saturday — the first starter to pitch consecutive games since 2002 — and gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings.

NY Yankees at Toronto – Yankees RHP Phil Hughes (3-4, 5.50) vs. Jays RHP Drew Hutchison (2-1, 5.53): Hughes picked up his second win in as many starts with his best outing of the season. He held the Mariners to one run over 7 2/3 innings. It was the third time since the start of the 2010 season that Hughes had recorded an out in the eighth inning. … Hutchison earned his second victory in his fifth Major League start on Saturday, going six strong innings to beat the Twins 2-1. He struggled with his fastball command but relied on his changeup to get out of a couple of jams.

Boston at Tampa Bay – Red Sox LHP Felix Doubront (3-1, 4.46) vs. Rays LHP Matt Moore (1-3, 5.31): Doubront has won two in a row and allowed one run in six innings in his last start, throwing 109 pitches against the Indians. The southpaw gets another shot against the Rays after allowing four runs in five innings April 15. … Moore only allowed one earned run Saturday against the Orioles, but he only made it through 4 1/3 innings on a night when the Rays committed five errors while he was on the mound. Moore has now lost his last two decisions.

Cincinnati at NY Mets – Reds RHP Mat Latos (2-2, 4.54) vs. Mets RHP R.A. Dickey (5-1, 3.65): Latos was unable to repeat his successful performance against the Pirates a week prior when the Nationals came to town on Saturday. The right-hander only lasted five innings, while missing the strike zone with his breaking ball. … Dickey was hit on the right forearm midway through his last start against the Marlins, and hardly had his best knuckleball of the season working. Arizona at Colorado – Diamondbacks RHP Trevor Cahill (2-4, 3.65) vs. Rockies RHP Juan Nicasio (2-1, 4.65): Cahill walked the first batter he faced on four pitches, hit two batters in a row in the sixth and then gave up a two-run double to Giants starter Matt Cain in his last start. He struggled with command and the Giants made him pay for it. … In his last start, Nicasio struck out nine and held the Dodgers to one run in seven innings at Dodger Stadium. However, the Rockies didn’t hit and lost, 2-1. He will have to rebound from his last start at Coors, a 7-2 loss to the Braves.

St. Louis at San Francisco – Cardinals RHP Adam Wainwright (2-4, 6.16) vs. Giants RHP Matt Cain (2-2, 2.28): Wainwright tied a career high with five walks Saturday. It was the first time he had walked more than two this year and just the second time he hadn’t finished five innings. He had previously won all six of his career starts vs. Atlanta. … Cain ended the Giants’ nine-game losing streak against the D-backs on Saturday night by throwing six innings of three-hit, one-run ball while striking out eight. He also helped his own cause with a 2-for-3 and two-RBI night at the plate.

Pittsburgh at Washington – Pirates RHP James McDonald (2-2, 2.42) vs. Nationals RHP Jordan Zimmermann (2-3, 2.14): McDonald will try to extend a stretch of domination that has seen him ring up almost twice as many strikeouts (33) as hits allowed (18) in his last four starts, covering 29 innings. … Zimmermann picked up his second win of the season by going seven innings and striking out nine in a 2-1 victory at Cincinnati. He lowered his ERA to 2.14 and has allowed just 37 hits in 46 1/3 innings this season.

Miami at Atlanta – Marlins RHP Ricky Nolasco (4-1, 3.65) vs. Braves RHP Brandon Beachy (4-1, 1.60): Going for sole possession of Miami’s career wins record, Nolasco struggled. He gave up six runs on nine hits in a loss to the Mets. After walking three total in his previous three starts, he walked three in the first frame and hit two batters late. … Beachy has six successive quality starts after allowing just one run over six innings in a win at St. Louis on Saturday. He also added an RBI single in the win. The righty has given up two earned runs or fewer in all seven starts this season.

Milwaukee at Houston – Brewers RHP Shaun Marcum (2-1, 3.07) vs. Astros LHP J.A. Happ (2-3, 5.72): Retiring 16 of the last 18 hitters he faced, Marcum tossed seven innings in his last start, allowing one run on three hits, along with two walks and six strikeouts. He lowered his ERA to 3.07, best among Brewers starters. … Happ allowed five runs on six hits over six innings in a 5-2 loss at Pittsburgh. Happ settled down after a rough first frame and retired 13-of 15 batters but struggled in the fifth and allowed two runners to open the sixth to end his day prematurely.

Philadelphia at Chicago Cubs – Phillies RHP Roy Halladay (3-2, 3.20) vs. Cubs RHP Chris Volstad (0-5, 6.92): Halladay twirled seven innings of two-run ball, scattering seven hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts in Saturday’s tough-luck loss to the Padres. … Volstad cruised through five scoreless innings against the Brewers, then everything fell apart in the sixth. Again. He’s had trouble with one inning in each of his starts and is winless in his last 18 starts, dating back to July.

LA Dodgers at San Diego – Dodgers RHP Aaron Harang (2-2, 4.46) vs. Padres RHP Edinson Volquez (2-2, 2.79): Harang is coming off his best start as a Dodger, eating up eight innings and allowing only one run in a 2-1 win over Colorado. It was his second consecutive solid start after a few shaky early outings. … Volquez was feeling sick in his last start against the Phillies, though it didn’t show as he allowed one run in six innings with five strikeouts. “I took a lot of pills,” Volquez joked. Volquez got nine ground-ball outs in the game. His ERA is 2.79.

But, alas, then sixth place Derby finisher Liaison and ninth place runner Hansen bowed out. So did newcomers Hierro, Brimstone Island and Paynter. That leaves a field of 11.

Twice the favorites in the second leg of the Triple Crown bounced back from defeats in the Kentucky Derby. Back in 1992, Pine Bluff, who finished off the board in the Derby, won the Preakness by three-quarters of a length.

In ’05 Afleet Alex captured the Preakness by 4 ¾ lengths after finishing third at Churchill Downs to longshot Giacomo. Ironically, Giacomo finished third at Pimlico.

Last year favored Animal Kingdom, the Derby winner, finished second to Preakness longshot Shackleford, who ran fourth in Louisville.

This year Bodemeister, favored at Louisville but second to longshot I’Il Have Another, as a good chance of redeeming himself.

The number of Derby horses in the Preakness has averaged about five the past 25 years. That’s the number likely to go Saturday in the probable field of 11.

So let’s start with the Pretenders:

First, I’m eliminating runners with only a single victory in their career: Cozzetti, a maiden winner last year; Optimizer, who hasn’t scored since his racing debut last August; and Teeth of the Dog, victorious only last February.

I’m also discounting slower horses: Guyana Star Dweej, Pretension and Zetterolm. I’m also disregarding Tiger Walk because of his lackluster form: fourth in his last pair.

Creative Cause made an eight wide run out of the Churchill Downs far turn to gain third in the stretch, but ended up fifth and hasn’t looked good in his last two chasing I’ll Have Another.

Now the Contenders:

Daddy Nose Best endured a horrible trip in the Derby right from the start after been forced in and steadied. Then the Sunland Derby winner made a good run to mid-stretch where he was bumped. A better trip should improve his 10th place finish and could put him in the money.

Went the Day Well was traveling best of all in the Derby, making up more than eight lengths in the stretch to finish fourth. A good trip will mean hitting the board and maybe even result in a victory.

Bodemeister, with the lack of speed horses, most likely will go to the front. If he sets a sensible pace, he could all the way.

I’ll Have Another has proved a real gamer in his last two triumphs. Both times he looked rivals in the eye and disposed of them. He should do it again.

This event used to draw a top-notch field as players wanted to pay respect to Byron Nelson. But he died in September 2006 and since then the tournament hasn’t seen the same amount of marquee names. However, Hall of Famers Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els are in the field this week along with seven of the top-25 players off the World Rankings.

Mickelson is the co-+900 favorite on WagerWeb.com along with Aussie Adam Scott. It’s Mickelson’s first appearance at this event since he tied for third in 2007. Could Kuchar (+1000) win back-to-back? Kuchar ranked T3 in greens hit at the Players and second in Strokes Gained-Putting. He shared sixth place at last year’s Nelson.

How about Louis Oosthuizen (+1800) ? Although he missed the cut last week, Oosthuizen has recently finished third in Houston and runner-up at The Masters, plus a win at the Maybank Malaysian Open. He is making his first appearance here.

Experience has always been a key to winning, since the tournament has been played at the TPC at Four Seasons. Ted Purdy, Neal Lancaster, Robert Damron, Brett Wetterich, Jason Day and Keegan Bradley are the only players that won for the first time.

Bradley (+1600) is the defending champion, beating Ryan Palmer in a playoff. Before this event last year, nobody knew him as he was a rookie on tour. But with his win at the Nelson, it led to him winning the PGA Championship and then becoming rookie of the year and one of the hottest players on tour.

Hitting lots of greens also is vital here. Since 1998 only four players (Jesper Parnevik in 2000, Shigeki Maruyama in 2002, Rory Sabbatini in 2009 and Jason Day in 2010) have been out of the top nine in greens hit.

Last season, while helping lead Friends Central to a 22-5 record, Jefferson averaged 19.9 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks. For his career, he totaled 1,569 points, 839 rebounds, and 189 blocks.

Jefferson’s pledge gives Krzyzewski the No. 11 overall recruiting class and a pair of McDonald’s All-Americans. The scoring leader from last year’s NBA Top 100 Camp, Jefferson joins fellow McDonald’s All-American Rasheed Sulaimon (Houston, Tex./Strake Jesuit), the No. 12 overall prospect in the country and one of the most dangerous shooters in the senior class. Jefferson was considered the best unsigned recruit remaining.

Jefferson, ranked as the No. 25 overall prospect in the nation by ESPN, will help fill the void left by Miles Plumlee, who has used up his eligibility (Duke also lost star freshman guard Austin Rivers to the NBA). Jefferson isn’t likely to be an immediate starter — those frontcourt roles are likely to be filled by Ryan Kelly and Mason Plumlee — but he will be in the running for first big off the bench along with Alex Murphy, Josh Hairston and Marshall Plumlee.

As Jefferson pointed out, the Blue Devils have a vacancy. “Right now, I don’t think they have a guy at my position,” he said. “I don’t think they have a guy like me.”

Jefferson’s length, feel for the game and craftiness along the baseline, especially going to the short corner, make him special. The majority of his points come in the paint — where he uses his reach, body control and soft touch — or at the foul line, and you will very rarely see him shoot it beyond midrange. Jefferson should help immediately on defense and is said to have a very high basketball IQ and thus been compared to former Duke stars Shane Battier and Luol Deng in that regard.

Jefferson said he finalized his decision on Sunday, only days before Wednesday’s end of the spring signing period.

“In the end, I wanted to choose the school that I thought fit me best on and off the court,” said Jefferson. “I think I made a great choice. Duke is a prestigious school, a school that’s going to challenge me on and off the court. I’m excited about that challenge. It’s something I wanted.”

Coach K has had success recruiting in the Philadelphia area. Recent are graduates Brian Zoubek (Haddonfield) and Gerald Henderson (Episcopal Academy) played at Duke.

The vastly disappointing Philadelphia Phillies just can’t seem to get healthy as they have had to put Wednesday’s projected starting pitcher, Vance Worley, on the disabled list retroactive to May 12 with elbow inflammation (he will miss at least three starts). Thus Kyle Kendrick, who has been terrible this season, replaces Worley for Wednesday’s game at the Chicago Cubs, who are -155 WagerWeb.com favorites.

Worley said Tuesday he has felt some discomfort in his elbow for about a month. The 24-year-old has a 3-2 record, 3.07 ERA and 45/15 K/BB ratio over his first seven starts this season. The Phillies recalled left-hander Joe Savery from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Worley’s place on the 25-man roster.

The Phillies have relied heavily on their starting pitching to crawl to an 18-19 record. Worley finished third in rookie of the year voting a season ago. His last outing was a 7-3 victory Friday over San Diego in which he fanned nine in six innings while allowing three runs. The Phillies are 4-3 in games started by Worley this season.

Kendrick (0-3, 7.32) has pitched only one inning in the previous 11 days. He made three starts for Cliff Lee while he was disabled, and the Phillies lost all three. Kendrick will face a Chicago offense that is clicking of late. The Cubs finished their five-game road trip to Milwaukee and St. Louis with a .276 (54-for-195) batting average, six homers and 29 runs scored (5.8 runs per game). Chicago first baseman Bryan LaHair has reached base safely in a team-high 32 straight games.

Philadelphia has won three consecutive games for the first time this year after being stalled at two victories five times. The Phillies won at least three straight games 14 times last year. Much of the credit is owed to the hitters filling the Nos. 5-8 spots in the batting order, who have combined to hit .359 (41-for-114) with three homers, 21 RBIs and 22 runs scored over the Phillies’ recent homestand.

The Phillies go against one of the NL’s better pitchers in Matt Garza (2-1, 2.56). Last time out, Garza struggled with his control Friday but allowed just one run over five innings against the Brewers. He gave up three hits and five walks while striking out three. Garza threw 93 pitches in the start, his first since missing last weekend’s start with the flu.

Garza has allowed more than two runs just once this season and is 2-1 with a 0.96 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 28 career innings vs. the Phillies.

The focus of heavy defensive pressure and a series of hard fouls, James and Wade wore down at the end. After leading the Heat back from a double-digit deficit, Wade missed four shots in the final 2:05 and James clanked two free throws that would have given them the lead with 54 seconds left. The two were so out of gas that Mario Chalmers ended up taking the final shot with Miami down by three. James and Wade combined for 52 points but no other Heat player managed more than five.

Indiana Pacers : Indiana handled things just about as well as they possibly could in Game 2 and still had to sweat out a 78-75 win. Roy Hibbert, David West and Paul George controlled the glass but the Pacers still need to get more offensively from Danny Granger, who expended most of his energy on the defensive end against Wade and James. Granger ended up fouling out with 11 points on 5-of-14 shooting and is just 6 for 24 from the field in the series. Indiana could stand to give Hibbert more of a chance on the offensive end, as he had just six field goal attempts in Game 2 despite Miami not having Bosh around to defend.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Game 3 will mark James’ 100th career playoff outing.

2. Miami PG Norris Cole played 17 minutes Tuesday, just shy of his total from the previous six playoff games.

Paul did have 10 assists and five steals, but he also committed five turnovers and missed his last nine shots. Blake Griffin (knee) had 15 points and nine rebounds, but played fewer than 29 minutes for the second straight game and admitted he was feeling “80 percent.” The silver lining was the play of reserve guard Eric Bledsoe, who tied his career high with 23 points.

San Antonio Spurs: The Clippers could not stop Tim Duncan, but perhaps the Sports Illustrated jinx can. Duncan, who appears on the cover of this week’s issue, was magnificent in Game 1 with 26 points and 10 rebounds – his 133rd postseason double-double. It was the highest output in the playoffs for the 36-year-old Duncan since he scored 29 in May 2010. Veteran Manu Ginobili, another of San Antonio’s old guard, came off the bench to score 22 points and was among three Spurs players to hit three 3-pointers. One of the intriguing subplots of the series is the much-ballyhooed matchup at point guard between Paul and Tony Parker. Like Paul, Parker struggled in the opener with seven points on 1-for-9 shooting, though he had a game-high 11 assists.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Spurs C Boris Diaw grabbed 12 rebounds – his second-highest total of the season – to help his team dominated the backboards 47-34.

2. Clippers G Nick Young nailed all three 3-point attempts and had 13 points, helping Los Angeles to a 46-37 edge in bench scoring.

Carter made good both times, completing his hat trick after scoring just once in his first 10 playoff games. “Obviously I’d love to be scoring every game,” he said. “They haven’t come that easily for me the last little while here. It’s something that I’ve been working on in practice, trying to get to the net during the game, get a couple greasy ones.”
