College Football Bowl Games are Here!

It is a week into the college bowl games and we’ve already seen some exciting action from Gildan New Mexico to San Francisco. Here follow some of the highlights of the games so far and a look at the upcoming schedule.

CSU, USC and Louisiana Lafayette Kick off the Bowl Games with Impressive Wins

The BCS 2013 kicked off with a superb rally by Colorado State (48-45) against the Washington State Cougars on Dec 21. CSU kicker Jared Roberts scored a 41-yard goal that clinched the game just as time ran out. Another highlight was Kapri Bibbs, Colorado’s running back, who rushed 169 yards with 3 touchdowns and 27 carries despite a turf-toe.

bowl gameThe same day at Las Vegas’ Boyd Stadium, USC (45) blew out Fresno State (20) with USC quarterback setting a record with 4 touchdown passes in the first half. Meanwhile at Boise at the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, San Diego State (49) showed excellent form when it pounded Buffalo (24), taking full advantage of the other team’s miscues and Adam Muema’s power and speed (he had 3 touchdowns and 229 yards on 28 carries). Elsewhere in New Orleans, Louisiana Lafayette (24) edged Tulane (21) in a much closer battle that ended when Tulane kicker Cairo Santos attempted a 48 yard field goal and missed wide left with just 9 seconds to go.

East Carolina and Oregon State Roll to Comfortable Victories

The game between East Carolina (37) and Ohio (20) in St. Petersburg, Florida on December 23 saw East Carolina win a comfortable victory with the ball in possession for over 33 minutes and 568 yards of offense. On Christmas Eve at Honolulu’s Aloha Stadium, Oregon State (38) rolled to a victory over Boise State (23) after Storm Woods scored with a 5 yard run in the third quarter.

Boxing Day Battles End With Pittsburg and Utah State Happy, Jordan Lynch Nearly So

The BCS continued in Detroit on Boxing Day with a head-to-head game between Pittsburg (30) and Bowling Green (27). Both teams had a return for a touchdown each and the field goal by Pittsburg’s Chris Blewitt with just over a minute to go clinched it. The other game on Thursday saw Utah State (21) and Northern Illinois (14) battle it out in San Diego. Northern Illinois had a head start with Jordan Lynch passing and running for his team scores, but the second half was dominated by Utah State. A highlight was Lynch’s near-miss (by 80 rushing yards) of the record that would make him the first major college player to both run and pass for 2000 yards in the same season.

Marshall and Syracuse End the Season With Wins

Friday saw a showdown at the Military Bowl between Marshall (31) and Maryland (20) ended in Marshall’s tenth win of the season in a repetition of 2002. It was a close game from the start with Marshall leading at half-time (17-13) and the fourth quarter dominated by Maryland. But Rakeen Cato’s impressive 337 yard throw and three touchdowns along with A.J. Leggett’s interception of an errant pass.

Meanwhile at the Texas Bowl, the Syracuse (21)-Minnesota (17) battle was not pretty by any means. The struggling Gophers managed to score 2 touchdowns in 3 minutes, the first touchdowns since Nov 9 for UM, to take the lead. Orange seemed simply to be going through the motions until Brisly Estime rallied with a 70-yard punt return and Minnesota let time run out without connecting.

Friday night’s last game between Brigham Young (16) and the Huskies of Washington State (31) ended with the Huskies winning their 2nd bowl game since their Rose Bowl victory 13 years ago. This was an impressive victory despite the whirlwind month for the team with Coach Steve Sarkisian leaving for California.

That wraps up the games so far. Stay tuned for three exciting games coming up on ESPN today (between Cincinnati and North Carolina, Miami and Louisville and Michigan vs. Kansas State later tonight.
